The History of FRC Group.
Bulky Bob’s – Going back to our roots
The launch of Bulky Bob’s in 2000 saw FRC Group - as it began to style itself - return to its roots of collecting unwanted furniture and redistributing it to low income families. In the 1990s FRC Group had moved its focus away from secondhand furniture because of challenges around the volumes and quality of donated furniture and high collection costs. We had never questioned the impact that these items had in the lives of people who got furniture - we simply could not make the approach work. However, FRC Group recognised that the solution to these challenges could lie in a partnership with Liverpool Council.
Liverpool City Council’s subcontractor was collecting hundreds of thousands of items of furniture which were being landfilled. FRC Group approached Liverpool City Council with a novel money saving proposal that saw FRC Group being paid to collect the bulky household waste , reuse and recycle what could be reused or recycled, get great quality furniture to low income families and train long term unemployed people.
On June 6th 2000, after an exhaustive OJEU procurement process, Bulky Bob’s began work. After retaining the contract in 2009 – against stiff private sector competition – Bulky Bob’s continues to deliver the service very successfully in Liverpool and is contracted to do so until 2015.
Additionally, Bulky Bob’s has been awarded contracts to collect, reuse and recycle bulky household waste for Oldham, Warrington and Halton councils and continues to expand around the country.
