The Early Years

FRC Group’s origin lies in Furniture Resource Centre which was set up as a charity in Liverpool in 1988. Furniture Resource Centre was established by Nic Frances - an Anglican Minister who moved to Liverpool with the express purpose of helping people who were homeless or living in poverty.

Early YearsNic quickly realised that many of the people he was attempting to help were without the very basic furniture items that most of us take for granted. He also realised that until someone has a bed to sleep in and an oven to cook with it is unlikely that they will be able to live a ‘normal’ life. Nic started Furniture Resource Centre – operating as a traditional furniture charity; volunteers would collect unwanted goods and redistribute them to families in need or sell them in the charity’s shops to raise money to cover the organisations’ running costs.

Furniture Resource Centre could easily have continued as a traditional furniture charity but FRC Group’s core values of Bravery, Creativity, Passion and Professionalism were evident even then. This spirit drove Furniture Resource Centre to transform itself from a traditional charity running on donations and volunteers into a social business that could make a greater difference to the lives of more people.

You can read Nic’s extremely entertaining and informative account of the early days of Furniture Resource Centre in his excellent book ‘ The end of charity’ which is available to purchase via a link on our downloads page
