Revive – Adventures on the High Street
Furniture Resource Centre’s new social business was great news for tenants of social landlords but not so great for low income families who could not get furniture from a social landlord.
Our aspiration was to help low income families by developing the charitys’ ‘Revive’ shops from selling secondhand furniture to selling new goods at much lower prices than the mainstream competition. As ambitious as ever, Furniture Resource Centre embarked on this on a grand scale and leased a 12,000 square foot flagship store in central Liverpool.
Revive’s plan was to source new products and sell them cheaply as the charity would apply a lower profit margin than competitors would. However, the reality of business principles began to hit home. Revive’s very small purchasing volumes gave the company none of the scale discounts that larger operators benefit from. It quickly became apparent that large chains - even with much larger mark ups - could sell products cheaper than Revive. Revive floundered for a few years, believing that it had a workable proposition but was hindered by a range of operational challenges - the wrong stock, wrong suppliers, wrong messaging and wrong management.
In fact it was only when we launched Bulky Bob’s that a clear role for the Revive store emerged. Revive took on the role of selling the vast volumes of great quality pre loved furniture collected through Bulky Bob’s. In October 2010 Revive moved location and acquired great new premises and a new name – the store is now branded as ‘Bulky Bob’s Furniture World’.
