The History of FRC Group.
Shoplifting Ice Cream – Ben & Jerry's
One of the basic principles of the Cat’s Pyjamas learning experience is ‘ we’ll show you some great organisations with fantastic ideas and initiatives that you can shoplift for your own organisation’.
Therefore when The Cat’s Pyjamas visited a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream franchise in San Francisco run by Juma Ventures’, it is unsurprising that we were interested in this idea.
Juma Ventures ran a ‘partnershop’ that not only made money by selling ice cream but recruited, trained and employed homeless young people.
Ben & Jerry’s ‘partnershop’ initiative offers a preferential franchise deal to ‘nonprofits’ and they access increased levels of help and support and cheaper product costs than conventional franchisors.
In 2003, FRC Group opened the first Ben & Jerry’s Partnershop outside of the U.S. in Chester. The Ben & Jerry’s store was planned to create both financial profits and social dividend. However, to condense what was to be a very bruising experience for FRC Group into a few sentences:
• The young people who we recruited, trained, supported and got to know and love had a great experience during their
12 month training programme and many went on to great things.
• The partnershop was a commercial failure.
• FRC Group learned a lot (the hard way!)
The Ben & Jerry’s store –despite being a franchise that was supposed to be insulated from excessive risk – made substantial trading losses and had to fund equally substantial fit out costs. In short, FRC Group was working to an unachievable business plan. BUT – Partnershops can work – have a look at the Cresco Trust www.crescotrust.com
