Our Training Programmes - Driving Change and Launch Pad
The social purpose of FRC Group is to change the lives of people living in poverty and unemployment. One way we do this is by creating effective training programmes that prepare unemployed people to move in to employment.
The FRC Group approach to training is to work with people for a 12-month period to make a big change in their lives. Our trainees take on real work in our businesses. We pay them a salary, provide specialist training and transferable skills and prepare them to move on into the mainstream employment market. As well as the chance to work in our businesses, we give trainees the full support of FRC Group’s People and Learning Team to ensure that they succeed and that their chances of long term employability are greatly increased.
Training for unemployed people has been at the heart of FRC Group for more than 15 years. In the earliest days of the organisation, we knew that our then volunteers were gaining valuable experience that could help them to get a job. On top of the on the job work experience, we added a number of training courses that lead to certificates and professional qualifications that are needed to work in the logistics industry.
In 2008 FRC Group’s “Driving Change” programme was the overall UK Winner at the National Training Awards. The judges described “Driving Change” as “offering excellent opportunities for their trainees to gain qualifications, but providing a truly life changing experience that fully sets those trainees up for sustainable employment in the future”.
“The “Driving Change” programme includes
• A paid job for 12-months
• LGV Class II Licence or a car license
• A choice of Fork Lift Licence, ADR Licence or HIAB
• Manual Handling Certificate
• First Aid Certificate
• Health and Safety Certificate
• Equal Opportunities Training
• Tachograph Training
• Numeracy and Literacy Training
• Environmental Training
• Job Search Support
What’s the impact?
In the past decade more than 200 previously unemployed people have been through the 12-month training programmes with an average of 80% - and as many as 94% of a single cohort - entering employment at the end of the programme.
We compare the chances of finding work for someone who has been out of work for 2.5 years and completed “Driving Change” and someone who has not. Our findings show that “Driving Change” trainees are 6 times more likely to find employment after completing FRC Group’s training programme than they were when they started.

Launch Pad
At FRC Group, we run a work experience placement programme which we call Launch Pad. Launch Pad enables people to participate in meaningful mainstream activities; gain work experience and qualifications, participate in society, and spend their time in purposeful activities in a great working environment. We aim to give people the skills, tools and attitudinal change they require to make positive changes in their lives that will benefit individuals and their families. We work with people who are unemployed and have barriers to work such as addictions, mental health issues, physical disabilities, learning difficulties or a background of offending.
Launch Pad participants learn new, transferable skills, and gain an increased level of confidence. Former Launch Pad participants have reported a gain in confidence; they have made new friends, and have developed improved communication skills. Crucially, former participants have reported a feeling of satisfaction when completing jobs; with this has come an increased feeling of life satisfaction.
Launch Pad participants get the following:
• Voluntary work placements giving people the chance to gain skills, confidence and experience to build towards finding employment
• Defined placement opportunities in specific tasks: warehouse, recycling, retail, administration
• An internal training package
• One-to-one reviews
• Individual support
At FRC Group, we are in the business of helping people long-term, not just short-term. We know that we cannot solve every problem; however, we can, and are determined to, help unemployed people re-enter a world of work or to deal with their personal issues. When these people are given an opportunity, they are essentially provided with a starting-point: they have the necessities they need to begin to build a career and with this comes a feeling of pride, of improved confidence and of improved self-esteem. Feeling more socially and economically 'included', they are more likely to find permanent employment, which will bring economic stability and increased self-worth. In short, if a person is given a launch pad, they have the opportunity to soar.
